Theyre the incarnation of dumb and dumber but in a way that they completely understand each other and everyone else is like, wow they're so dumb.

Zoro was the only straw hat that Luffy intentionally seeked out. He heard the story of "The Demon of The East" and went, yep I want that one.

They hold each other accountable on a level that goes so much deeper than captain and first mate.

Zoro not believing in God and Luffy literally becoming a God.

They both have one train of thought, protect the crew, accomplish goal, and eat/sleep

Luffy x Sanji

The saying the way to a man's heart is through his stomach is the case for the both of these two.

Literally all of Whole Cake Island

Luffy decided that he wanted Sanji on his crew because of how kind he was. Before he knew his fighting skills or even because he was a chef. He saw Sanji feed someone in need and didn't think twice about recruiting him.

A boy who was locked away in a prison as a child fighting alongside the embodiment of freedom and liberation.

zolu, arguably, has one of the most complex dynamics in the show. zoro has completely dedicated himself to luffy and luffy has pushed him to accomplish his dream. zoro sacrificed himself in thriller bark, giving up his dream, and promise to kuina, and nearly died in the process. zoros unwavering loyalty in luffy and luffys unwavering trust in zoro is part of the main appeal. im not a cishet female, so its probably why most of this got me upset, but i myself hc them both as aspec, and that they arent very sexual people. i wouldnt necessarily call either "female gaze-y" since the male gaze is a product of the patriarchy and the female gaze is more in a "how does this man treat a woman" way but yeah.

if u disagree w me thats ok! u can block me or send me an ask explaining why u prefer zoro and sanjis dynamic! its just not for me! i just think throwing around baseless accusations like straight washing or fetishization is weird

A collective gasp, followed by dead silence falls across both crews. Not hungry, what is this? They are used to Law not eating, but Luffy, nuh-uh, it might as well be the end of the world.

Strawhats accusing Law of doing this to their captain (true), its lighthearted bickering for the most part, they arent going to pass up giving Law some grief for knocking up their captain, and this is a good chance as any, (also they are worried and this helps). The heart pirates arguing right back, gotta defnd their captains honor xd.

Luffy laughs.

Law groans. "You need to eat"

"But I dont wanna," Luffy pouts. "Nothing smells good" he huffs. "Baby, dont like food," He nods. "She takes after you like that, Traffy." Luffy laughs again.

"I'll force feed you if I have to," Law grumbles even though he won't

Luffy tilts his head with a smirk. "Promise? Shishishi" He licks his lips, slowly dragging his tongue across.

Law blushes, "dammit, Luff." he looks over the table. There is all sorts of food. He gets an idea, taking a piece of meat between his teeth. Then, pulling Luffy close for a kiss.

Luffy is surprised but takes the food swallowing before returning the slow kiss.

"Hows that, hungry yet, strawhat-ya?" Law takes another piece of food between his fingers, its messier then he would usually eat but if it helps Luffy, then he doesnt care.

"Mmm, maybe, if i get to kiss you again, Traffy." He chuckles, bitting down on the food between Law's fingers and then licking up the juice.

They ignore their crews telling them to get a room xd.

Luffy still gets the opposite of cravings since he always gets what he wants and indulges his desires, so his body, when with baby, just goes full in on food aversion.

Law has instead come up with creative ways of getting Luffy to eat and being forced to eat better as well. Luffy only eating as long as it's on Law's plate, also means the heart pirates have to tag along even longer with the strawhats xd

im gonna be very honest with you here. i think the only useful people in the strawhat crew are chopper and sanji when you are sick.

that doesnt mean that the other members arent gonna worry about you though!

chopper will make you some medicine and order you to stay in your bed to get enough sleep.

sanji is probably gonna be a bit dramatic at the beginning, crying and throwing a fit that you wont be around him anymore for a few days. he loves your presence and you always offer your help in the kitchen, even though it might not even be your best strength.

after calming down a bit (nami probably punched him in the face until he stopped crying), he's gonna make you something to eat to strengthen your body again. his food is gonna make you feel soothened and safe <33

now to the useless people in the crew:

luffy is gonna be sulking! you arent here to play with him anymore? he can understand that you are sick and you need rest, but seeing you so tired and exhausted in your bed? it pains him to see you like this.

luffy is gonna sit on the bed, right next to you, and tries to make you laugh. he's gonna bend his face and tickle you until you are laughing again (even though thats probably gonna make you feel more exhausted. but he's trying his best, i promise.)

usopp is right next to him, showing you a few party tricks he learned that might amaze you. they are both just trying to make you forget about your symptoms and kill the time that you are forced to spend in bed & play games with you. (chopper wont let you leave early. nope. not gonna happen.)

zoro is gonna be absolutely clueless on how to help you. he might hand you a few tissues when you ask him for them, but not without grumbling a bit. he may act annoyed that you are sick and that he has to help now, BUT he also stays when the others are gone, taking a nap on the floor next to your bed so you dont feel too lonely. you told him he doesnt need to stay. he told you to shut up. (lovingly of course)

robin and nami are gonna be the only people on the ship who are checking in on you properly every few hours. nami brings you something to drink, robin gets you a book she enjoyed, and they both stay a few minutes. they probably will start a small talk about something one of you read a few days ago, just for you to ignore your symptoms for a few minutes before tucking you back into bed.

Brook is gonna be camping in your room too, playing you a few songs on his violin just for your mood to rise again.

i think its a fun ship but mostly for like smut for me. i dont think they’d all mesh well in a throuple relationship. in an au where they arent seperate from law all the time i could see it working better but in a canon compliant version law being on a different ship and captain of it i think wouldnt work out long term.

Im on the episode where all the strawhats get seperated by Kuma. So I thought I should write out my thought about the straw hats at the moment before the timeskip.

Over all I love them.

I love how loyal they are to eachother and how they all get screentime and attention. Some shows often forgets about characters in later episodes. But the straw hats all get their own fights either solo or team up.

I love their dynamic. There are so small interaction through out the serie between the characts that they all really seem alive. 

But why do the girls get real beds on the ship? Arent bed really horrible to sleep in if you on a boat?

And I love how the first rumor the worst generation had heard of the crew is that they are crazy. Ofcourse they are. They follow Luffy. But I till love thats that the thing outsiders hear about them. Sadly noone knew about Brook.

Now to each crewmate individually.

Luffy

I love how childish he is. He has the child like wonder and not bratty or annoying (or god forbid sexulised childish) and I get happy seeing him excited.

I love his laughter. He laughs different at different situations. But I mean speceficly that laughter he does when hes excited and the pitch goes up and down.

I also like that he is pretty selfish. Hes not nessessary cruel but he does eat peoples food and do what ever he want no matter others protests. He doesnt want to be a hero but he will fight anyone that either hurt or make his friends cry.

He wants to help but more often than not so is his 'helping' just to beat up a guy. And he mentioned he want to get stronger, not to save people out of kindness, but to stop people to leave him. He will eat others food. He will also do things for the sole reason he thought it would be funny and doesnt care what others want or care.

I also find his eyes creepy. I will guess its suppouse to make him look ‘innocent’. But his eyes looks so empty half the time, like his smile doesnt reach his eyes. It makes me love those scenes when his hat put shade on half his face so only his eyes are seen or when he stare emotionless at his opponents. Because there is this scrowny looking kid but the way he stare make you realise theres something not normal with him.

 Zoro

I love how loyal he is. His loyalty is actually what made me want to watch One Piece. I though One piece was more of a “friendship!” type of show and disregard offical titles of the crew. And seeing clips on yt of Zoro being so extremelly loyal to Luffy made me decide to give One Piece a chance. So thanks Zoro!

I also love when he gets all unhinged when he’s alone or about to fight. There was one meme with that “Too much energy” and “No energy” where Sanji, Luffy and Usopp being ‘to much energy’ with Zoro being ‘no energy’ together and Zoro alone become the ‘too much energy’ with his swords and coverd in blood. And that what I love about him.  

And I do love that while he is serious guy, he isnt always taken seriously. And gets put in ridiculous settings just like everyone else. And has his idiot moments like getting lost or just acting stupid.

Usopp

He’s fight scens are sometimes the most interesting fights of all the straw hats. Seeing him outsmart his opponents is entertaining. I especially like his battle with Mr 4 and Mrs Christmas under the Alabasta arc and his battle with Perona under Thriller Bark. His sniper moments in Enies Lobby is also great. But he didnt really outsmart anyone there. But he started to get the recognition he deserve.

Also starting to want to see Nami and him team up more. In Thriller Bark Nami lied to zombie Lola about being a man and Usopp joined in and call her by her fake name. Their personalities would work great together. They would definitely start a pyramid scheme.

Sanji

He might be the one I like the least. I dont hate him or anything. He just got bumb down the list by the others.

His behavor towards women is annoying. At times its fine as it just seem like normal flirting. But other times he is just really creepy. I get annoyed when a woman villian get introduced because I just know Sanji will be wierd about it. If he atleast block or dudge attacks from women then it wouldnt be as bad.  Theres a reason why Zoros bunty is higher than yours, Sanji. He did block few attacks from Kalifa under Enise Lobby though. I cheered that time. Still got his ass handed to him but Im fine with that. He can only play defense and refuse to fight for so long.

But outside of that I do like Sanji. 

I enjoy seeing him cook, fight and interact with other characters.

I still think about that genien smile he gave Luffy when he mentioned all blue for the first time. He normally are so cool and collected. But right there he looked so full of hope and excited like a kid. And he bonded with Luffy about having foolish dreams.

And when the other cooks in the baratie was trying to get him to leave with Luffy and talked bad about his soup that he was so proud of. Sanji looked like he was going to fight everyone but instead he ran out the door. It was such teenage move and made you realise he is still pretty young.

Sanji is one of the only ones that I think understable want to hang around Luffy. Not as reason to joining the crew, thats a completely different question. I dont know how to explain my thought process. Sanji just seem like a person that would want to have Luffy around him for his positive energy. The other person that would benefit from Luffy is Robin.

Similar to Zoro, Sanji seem to be the only other one that really respect Luffys rank as captain.

I loved his fights on the sea train towards Enise Lobby. It was great.

His fight with bon clay in Alabasta was really boring thou.

I saw there is a Sanji cooking book. I kinda want it. I dont cook thou. But I suppouse I would have a reason to learn with the cook book.

Nami

She also down there with Sanji. Also dont hate her. She just falls behind the others.

I wished the time when it was just Luffy, Zoro and Nami was dragged out a little more. They had a fun dynamic as rookies. After Usopp and Sanji joined it became an actual pirate crew. I would have loved to see the three in their tiny boats trying to make it work.

I love when she keep her crewmates in line and turn them into an actual serious crew. At the moment I mostly think about how she controls the money and when Luffy raids the fridge Sanji asked Nami to be able to buy a lock. And that time at Jaya when Nami pintches Luffys cheek to get him to agree to not look for a fight on the island.

I love her dynamatic with Luffy and Usopp the most. Not when Luffy and Usopp is together thou.  She really seem to care about Luffy even if he often gets on her nerves. And she seems to trust Luffys ability the most.  Like in Skypiea when she went with Enel and after hearing Luffys voice she got so full of hope. Even after seeing was Enel could do to people and not yet knowing that being rubber made Luffy immune to lightning. She still belived in Luffy. And in water 7 had a lot of food gathered just because she knew Luffy needed to eat before fighting. And I just love the idea of Nami and Usopp being besties. They the two weakest on the crew. And Usopp made her her clima-tact. But also how their two minds would have made up some great schemes.

Its her greed that I dislike. I wouldnt want to change is necessary thou. I think she would have been pretty boring and flat if she didnt have a flaw like that. But atleast you know the money is safe with her.

Chopper

I have discoverd I dont like him that much as a stand alone character. But love how he interact with other characters.

I love when Luffy, Usopp and Chopper get to act like children. I love how he seems to look up to Zoro. I just love how Chopper is the little brother of the crew and everyone look after him. Even when he is one of the heavy hitters of the crew.

I loved the episodes in the Alabasta arc when Luffy, Zoro and Chopper got lost in the desert. If I understand correct those were fillers and not from the manga. But I liked that Chopper asked the 'most senior member' of the group for advise. I do like him in the drum arc and his backstory. But after that, the few scenes Chopper is alone isnt as fun for me as the scenes he shares with others.

And with his different forms I like the jump point and the horn point the most. And the arm point the least.  I like that his forms make him looks like a reindeer monster. But the arm point creeps me out with the huge biceps. Stong arms are fine but when its only the upper arm that are ballons its grosses me out. I dislike Zoros ‘one gorilla, two gorilla’ move for the same reason.

Robin

As a villian she wasnt that interesting. I was excited when she first showed up in Alabasta. But she just comed off as a generic female assistence of the main villian. 

But I do love her now when she is in the crew.

I got happy everytime she smiled and laughted at the crew antics. And when she encourage Luffys behavior. Like when she packed his lunch at the beginning of Thriller Bark.

Her relationship with Luffy is great. It feels like shes gettin back some of her stolen childhood through Luffy. Like how she was daydreaming about the cats after hearing about the paw-paw fruit. 

And when Luffy doesnt understand something Robin is there to explain it to him in words he understand. She never yells at Luffy like the others do. She either encourage or explain to Luffy in a calm voice why something is a bad idea.

Franky

I like Franky, but his body scare me.

Normally in series when there is a cyborg its a person with visible metal parts on the body. It either looks like a person with metal armor or the body is so robotnic that I just see it as a robot. But with Franky all his modifications is under his skin. His body do get somewhat distorted. (Mostly his forearms, chin and nose.) But he still look mostly like a human. And I have difficulties seeing scenes where trauma happens to someones fingers or toes. Or horror scenes when someones body distortes in unnatural ways. So when Franky spin his arms, open his fingertips to reveal a gun, does that centaur thing with his legs or anything like that, I get shivers down my body and I end up grabbing whatever body part Franky is changing to a weapon to make sure my body doesnt move the same way as Frankys. Its an awful feeling.

And I love that Franky is like that. Even if it does make me incredibly uncomfortable. It actually make me question how human he is. I think thats the real point of cyborg characters. I dont think that was Odas intentionen. He probably just wanted a cool cyborg character. But I still love how he was made.

I like how everyone is calling him a pervert when he is one of the most respectible guys in the show.

I understand its probably a cultural difference that pervert in Japan refere to anyone whos more comfortable with nudity as Franky is this close 🤏 to just be a straight out nudist. Pervert in my mind is people that creeps on others. The only time he been somewhat gross is when Nami was ripping off Kalifas clothes to find her key, and Franky gives her a thumbs up. But Franky seemed more impressed about Namis action than actually seeing a woman getting stripped.

I love his personality but I cant really pin point what exactly I like about him. His vibe is just great.

Brook

Similar to Sanji, I dont really like the pervy part of him.

But its not as bad/constant like Sanji's so I can see it more as a gag. And seeing how different he act in the flashback and as a skeleton 50 years late, it comes out more as him gone crazy from being insulsted for so long. But we also never see him interact with a woman when he was still alive so its not completely sure if that is from going crazy or his normal personality.

He is an enjoyable character with his upbeat personality.

I also took very long before I realised how tall he is. I just though he was bit taller than avarage human but it was just him being so thin that was making him look tall. But then I saw how he really towers over people. Hes even taller than Crocodile. (Who I just uses as a reference for the hight when irl human start to get health problems from their hight).

ok so part of my frustration comes from being spoiled - if you know from the start that the pirates will fail, watching all these cool new pirates struggle against smarmy marine assholes knowing the assholes will come out on top doesnt feel fun, while i imagine the intended experience is for the viewer to be rooting for the pirates expecting them to win, and then be shocked and grief-struck when ace dies.

some of my other grievances are legitimate, though!

1st problem is this arc is too focused on new characters. we already lost the strawhats at sabaody, but in impel down the focus was consistently on luffy, with a rotating cast of familiar faces joining him and only 3 new allies introduced. marineford is a constant parade of new faces, some of the main emotional beats of the arc hang on those new faces, and sometimes it does not work at all. like, oars jr, sure, the flashback with the hat was cute enough and the animation and voice acting compelling enough that yeah, you feel for the guy when he nearly reaches ace then drops not-dead. squard, though? i dont feel shocked by his betrayal, cause i dont know him and he shows up outta nowhere with a spider on his face and a shirohige-sized sword. i dont feel moved by shirohige's forgiveness and his repentance, cause i barely know shirohige at this point and squard's little flashback after his betrayal wasnt enough to make him endearing. theres a stretch of episodes after the tsunamis freeze where luffy doesnt show up at all and it is Such a breath of fresh air when the impel down ship drops down in the middle of the battle cause why should i care abt this war otherwise?

also maybe it's just cause i'm bad at strategy but the battle makes so little sense to me? like it seems pretty clear that shirohige could destroy like all the marine small fry and the 3 admirals could destroy all the pirate small fry, but after their big opening moves of the twin tsunamis getting frozen by aokiji, they p much just sit back and watch for a huge chunk of the arc? like yeah having all the small fry wiped out early on would be lame, but u could have the admirals engage shirohige and the division commanders and then shift the narrative focus to the smaller battles, so i dont have to wonder why all the big names arent doing shit. the shichibukai get a pass cause it's been long established that they barely listen to the marines and it was an ordeal just to get them to show up, but everyone else confuses me

i think seeing plays is fun but being part of the production is way more exciting. i love getting to see all the behind the scenes work and like. i like being able to work with my hands a lot. and when i was spotlight for a few shows . that was so exciting. this is kinda lame but i get chills super easily from watching things (idk how else to explain this. chills. goosebumps. because im excited.) so whenever i would watch the shitty high school theatre productions we did i was still like. so proud of all the work that went into it. and i got chills every show. most of the time i didnt get to watch the show though because i was moving things on and off set. watching plays on youtube is so real.. i watched uh.. "natasha, pierre, and the great comet of 1812" on youtube. it was still very fun to watch. but yeah in person will always be better

ok heres an actual thought. sorry if it sounds awkward. some of this would be spoilery so i will just not include it but. pirates are all about dreams. they have big, lofty goals that they dont usually tell people about, probably out of shame and embarrassment. in sabaody it is hinted that kidd and killer told people that they were going after the one piece, and they were laughed at for it. not many pirates are like luffy, who proudly proclaims that he will be king of the pirates and find the one piece.

i find it really interesting that crocodile is hinted at having had a dream that was only possible through taking over alabasta. and enel's dream was to get to the "endless varse", even after being defeated he still headed towards his dream. he just ended up going alone. big mom's dream is a utopia where every race can live peacefully together. they all are willing to do awful things for the sake of their dreams.

but again, the difference between luffy and these other people and their dreams is that luffy is not hurting people in the pursuit of his dream. he isnt causing a bunch of people to suffer. in fact, he is doing the opposite. he has continuously been shown to free people from their oppressive rulers, and he crushes the dreams of those who are willing to sacrifice innocent people to achieve their goals.

i dont really have an end point to this but i think that the differences are kind of proof that luffy is going to actually succeed. because he is good at heart. because he doesnt kill people for the sake of his dream. and also i pity the people he defeated. like yeah theyre awful. but i cant help but wonder what crocodile wanted. i cant help but think about what kind of circumstances led them to that point in their life

kuina gives me a lot of feelings. i love her and everything she stood for. and her time with us as the audience was so brief but we remember her too. i like thinking about what she could have been if we got to see her grown up bc she was such an awesome kid. to influence someone like zoro too. and yea koshiro seems generally pretty cool but that was FUCKED UP and im gonna be mad about it forever. i’ve also heard that “falling down the stairs” in japan can be a way of getting around saying it was a suicide and when i first got into the fandom that was compelling to me but now i dont like it bc. she wouldnt have done that. she made her promise with zoro. she was probably feeling more hopeful about her dream than ever. but then…one small accident and she’s gone. it fucks me up :/ it fucked ZORO up. ive never made the connection that thats why he protects weak people…ah . i think to me kuina made a promise, and zoro takes promises very seriously. he’s very blunt in that he takes things at face value and so a promise is an ironclad thing. i dont think hes stupid and cant tell when someone is being deceptive but i think he thinks deception in that way is kind of unhonorable. 

IF I MAY in one of my fics i set aside part of a chapter (titled zoro alone. hehehe atla reference) and wrote this about zoro and kuina. its very simple and doesnt dive deep but i like it

i may seem to lean in more towards romanticism of zolu but imma be real here

theyre a whole secret third thing to me like— idk how to explain it it other than their love and bond transcends what romance and platonic. yes i will draw them smooching and have hearts flying all around them but it is not exactly romantic/platonic... (i mean honestly i dont mind how ppl interpret zolu whether its my art or in general)

bc i saw this one comic that just... perfectly described zolu and the strawhats to me? it was about law catching zolu and then discussing with the other strawhats about it and they explained that luffy does in fact love everyone equally and the same. for luffy, romantic nor platonic is Not a thing to him. (this is how i view luffy's aroaceness !! love isnt a category for him. love isnt something he could just pick and choose or whatever. love is just... loving someone. love is for the people very dear to him.) and in the comic, the strawhats say that zoro's the one and only guy who could keep up with luffy's energy and antics. so they dont mind the things they do together in privacy or in front of them. they know how much luffy loves them ALL EQUALLY and they all love him back

on topic of zolu and aroace... i've been around spaces and talked to a few zolu shippers (qpr shipping count) and noticed how many of us are at least on the aro/ace spectrum. there's just Something about zolu's special relationship that attracts us, and if you ship them and are aro/ace, im certain you'd agree. (even if you arent, we can mutually agree that they are a third thing, right?) like, theres something so... aroace about their relationship. they can be seen as romantic and they can be seen as platonic, but what can be absolutely certain is that their relationship is definitely queer. bc it's not something you can easily describe or that their relationship is The Norm. theyre insane for each other. luffy's the sun. zoro's the moon. luffy's a good. zoro's the king of hell. they complete each other. they absolutely need each other.

my memory is horrible and i cant say the words properly but basically: zolu's love and relationships transcends romance and platonically. yes you can see it as either, but as an aroace, i Feel it is way beyond that.

and again, will repeat it a million times over (mind you, it's not canon. it's a widely accepted HEADCANON. if you think luffy's sexuality is something else, thats cool): i believe that luffy's aroaceness is way beyond "not interested in attraction/xyz/whatever" like yeah, he doesn't think about it because it doesnt matter much to him. he doesnt apply whats romantic or platonic to HIS relationships. he can recognize romantic, sexual, platonic things. it's just not his thing to really think hard about (he doesnt think much in the first place (affectionage)) he feels love for the people he cares about and if they feel loved by him, however he approaches the love (and if they accept that kind of form) thats all that matters to him. he doesnt label/categorize love because it makes no sense to Him to prioritize someone over the other just bc he loves that someone a different way. he loves everyone equally and treats them as equals.

and when it comes to Any luffy ships, calling his significant other "partner" is what fits best. theyre not just best friends, theyre partners.

@ozo-blog it took me a minute to find the scene from skypiea!!! (mostly because i got caught up in skimming... it's such a fun arc)

that was chs. 252-3 apparently!! this isnt every panel, just the relevant ones.

youre so right tho this whole scene (whole arc tbh) is a rlly good example. something something "he got the spirit" meme; if you wanted to play in this space, you could argue that it's because small game like rats and frogs falls into the "nitty gritty" of what is/isnt edible. the "canon" gag here is probably that he and sanji are monsters who'll eat anything (and chopper is either also a monster or just generally an animal and doesn't get that rats and frogs arent acceptable people food), but yknow. the layers are funny to me.

in general, i think 115 is the earliest mention of hunting we have (that i can think of), which is fun. its also true that zoro's the one the mention of hunting is tied to. this leaves most of the east blue up for grabs, tho it's suffice to say that by this point in the timeline they're all well-versed enough in, like, dealing with the wilderness--regardless of the interim. (also--115 is the first mention of sanjis pirate lunches. and it has nami's "dont your cares just melt away on a ship like this" line to vivi. and the teeny "aye aye capn" zoro. and the usopp and nami ALL ALONE panel. ughhghg 115 in general is such a fun chapter.)

as for street smarts--oh, for sure, no doubt. maybe its too involved, but i went back and skimmed loguetown/rogue town and in ch. 96 we get this panel:

but i couldnt tell who says the initial line so i skimmed ep. 48, and it's luffy--

which makes sense, since the same chapter has a little flash to foosha as everyone's getting luffy's first bounty poster. and its... so tiny, comparatively. meanwhile everyone else is like "cool. a town. off we go." which tracks completely. like, for all the trouble zoro gets into, loguetown/rogue town is a great early example of the "street smarts" side of zoro in general--meanwhile luffy ends up nearly dying uhhh three chapters in (thanks buggy).

i just really, really love the idea of zoro having no real "survival skills" because he had a much more traditional (if atypical) childhood/youth than most of the crew. bandit heritage aside, he was raised in a tight-knit and relatively peaceful community with (at best) agricultural outskirts. he doesn't leave until he's much older, at which point he becomes a bounty hunter as a way to make money (to pay for food, shelter, etc. presumably in villages, towns, and cities). we know from the non-canon johnny and yosaku backstories that he "hunted" for bounties in cities/towns, at least partially.

meanwhile luffy has been running around the wilderness since he was like seven years old, securing his own food, building fire and shelter, and just generally toughening up/learning how to live in nature. we know he had a pretty extensive knowledge of bugs and how to catch them, so with that + his childhood i don't think it's a stretch to assume he also has an understanding of edible plants and non-monstrous wildlife (even if its not all applicable outside the East Blue). he's survived on his own in the wilderness for years at a time at least twice in canon.

i think it's fun to think of them having... some sort of "zoro is lost in more ways than one" kinda vibe early on in their journey, especially since they're constantly broke pre-timeskip and we know that at least by little garden the crew has started hunting and foraging to supplement their stores. you could absolutely rope the rest of the east blue grew into this, but zoro is still sort of the outlier with his background.

i dunno. maybe i just like the image of luffy trying to teach zoro how to hunt or fish and both of them just having the dumbest time with it. luffy would be really earnest but impatient--and zoro would be stubborn about admitting he doesn't know shit but would still listen and absorb anyway.

luffy having no clue how to start small and work up to new skills, so they end up going after massive wild boars or something as a first or second lesson and zoro just rolls with it because sure, yeah, thats normal. what the hell does he know? (and also hes fucking. zoro. so.)

or luffy teaching zoro to fish normally but also like a bear fishes (standing knee-deep in the water and catching fish with his bare hands) because it looks more fun that way and he cant. and zoro just fucking up soooo bad but getting really competitive anyway, even though luffy is just, like, sitting on a nearby rock yelling (frankly terrible) directions at him or something. zoro catches nothing and luffy tells him he looks stupid getting angry at the river so of course zoro is going to master fucking. bare-handed fishing because the man's got one braincell and its 99% stubborn pride.

he fucking sucks at starting a fire, wouldnt even consider building proper shelter, and in general would not make it 0.2 seconds outside a populated environment without his captain--a guy raised by the jungle and ace, who was basically a wild animal himself.

idk. survival-competent luffy is very near and dear to my heart.
